Russian attacks across Ukraine killed at least eight people on September 24, 2026, while U.S. officials held separate meetings with Russian and Ukrainian delegations in New York. The deaths came in a combined missile and drone assault that struck both frontline regions and the capital. Al Jazeera

Six people were killed and eight wounded in a strike on a farm in the Kharkiv region, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov writing on Telegram. Two more people were killed in Kyiv. One victim was found in the car park of a damaged maternity hospital. Eight were injured in the capital. Reuters

Ukraine's air force said the assault included hypersonic and ballistic missiles, 282 drones and other weapons. Hypersonic and ballistic missiles are very fast weapons that are hard for air defenses to stop. Explosions rocked Kyiv overnight as air defenses engaged. Russia hit the capital with ballistic missiles and drones in the attack that killed two.

Russia's Ministry of Defence said it targeted Ukrainian defence sites, logistics and telecommunications hubs, and vessels used by the military. Logistics means supply lines for fuel, food and weapons. It also said its forces struck a Black Sea tanker bringing fuel and lubricants to Ukraine's port of Chornomorsk.

Falling drone debris sparked a fire at an industrial facility in Russia's Krasnodar region, according to local authorities. No injuries were reported there. Poland's military deployed planes to secure its airspace in response to the attacks on Ukraine. Two Czech fighters were also deployed.

Warsaw separately said a fire at a Starlink ground station in central Poland was deliberate sabotage aimed at cutting internet access for institutions including the Ukrainian military. Starlink is a satellite internet system. Polish Deputy Prime Minister Krzysztof Gawkowski called the fire "hybrid warfare". Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski told Al Jazeera that NATO had "contingency plans" for Russia's "provocations".

U.S. officials met separately with Russian and Ukrainian officials on Sept. 23 on the sidelines of the U.N. General Assembly to discuss the war. Nearly 130 heads of state gathered for the Assembly session. Reuters Washington also invited Russian President Vladimir Putin to attend the next G20 summit in Miami, Florida.

Two days earlier, Russian strikes killed three people on September 22. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in the U.S. for the U.N. summit at the time.

On Sept. 24, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development reported that growth in developing economies was slowing, in part due to increasing prices of energy and wheat. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul called for a full and immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, starting in the Black Sea, to safeguard grain and food supplies. A ceasefire is a formal agreement to stop fighting.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio gave an interview to Sid Rosenberg on 'Sid and Friends in the Morning' on September 22. U.S. State Department Rubio said the war will eventually begin to impact global prices on oil and gas. He has separately described technical talks that take place at staff and expert level covering subjects such as nuclear energy and sanctions. Sanctions are economic penalties, such as trade and finance limits.

The broader context here is a war now fought across three domains at once. Think of it as three connected fronts. The air picture involves large numbers of drones combined with fast missiles meant to strain air defenses. The maritime picture involves fuel shipments, port infrastructure at Chornomorsk, and Black Sea transit. The information picture involves telecommunications hubs, satellite ground equipment, and alleged sabotage inside Poland.

In my view, the Polish incidents deserve close attention from practitioners. Airspace activation is reversible and routine. Sabotage attribution is different. If investigators sustain the claim of deliberate action against Starlink infrastructure supporting Ukrainian military communications, it connects battlefield logistics to domestic resilience in a NATO member. That is why language about contingency planning carries weight.

Looking at what this means for negotiations, New York produced contact without public convergence. Separate U.S. sessions with each side, a G20 invitation to Moscow, and Berlin's proposal to begin with the Black Sea suggest an effort to compartmentalize, or break the conflict into smaller pieces. A maritime ceasefire would address grain and energy flows first. It would leave the harder questions of territory, security guarantees, and sanctions rules for later staff-level work.
