Family link drove Swissair crash drama to Zurich Film Festival

A family tie to the cockpit sits behind 111 – Echoes From Halifax, playing at the Zurich Film Festival. The drama is directed by Swiss-Mexican filmmaker Mauro Mueller, after his creative partner and Fidelio Films producer Björn Hering urged him to take on the story of Swissair Flight 111, according to Variety. Hering is the son-in-law of the flight's pilot, Urs Zimmermann.
Swissair Flight 111 crashed off the coast of Halifax, Canada, in 1998. All 229 people on board were killed on Sept. 2, 1998.
The film does not reconstruct the crash itself. It dramatises the aftermath off the coast of Nova Scotia and explores lives altered in its wake, as described by The Globe and Mail. The characters are invented. Its central figures and their stories are fictional.
That choice keeps the focus on those left behind. Zimmermann, the pilot, appears briefly in the epilogue, a direct link between the real loss and the fictionalised account.
Mueller co-wrote the script with U.S. screenwriter Jennie Allen, according to Variety. Mueller's earlier credits include A World for Raúl. Anne Walser and Ann Bernier are listed as producers alongside Hering by Swiss Films.
The production was split between Canada and Switzerland. The team moved some interior scenes from Canada to Switzerland after receiving less financing in Canada than planned. Halifax Airport stood in for both Geneva and JFK airports during the shoot.
What makes this stand out is the distance it keeps. For viewers unfamiliar with the 1998 disaster, the film offers an entry point through ordinary people responding to sudden loss, rather than through the mechanics of the accident.
