John Malkovich to receive Santa Barbara's top acting honour for Wild Horse Nine
John Malkovich will receive the Santa Barbara International Film Festival's Outstanding Performer of the Year Award, The Hollywood Reporter reported on Sept. 24.
The honour recognises his performance as a twisted FBI agent in Martin McDonagh's Wild Horse Nine, according to the same report. It is a career prize, given for a single screen turn.
Malkovich will be celebrated with an evening of clips and conversation on Friday, Feb. 12, at Santa Barbara's historic Arlington Theater. The event sits near the close of the festival. Expect a full house.
The 42nd Santa Barbara International Film Festival will run Feb. 3-13, 2027. The seaside festival has become a regular stop in the winter awards season, when actors meet audiences and press between releases.
Wild Horse Nine began its public life at Telluride, Variety reported earlier in September. Malkovich then won the Volpi Cup for Best Actor at the Venice International Film Festival for the role, according to distributor Searchlight Pictures in a Sept. 17 post. The Volpi Cup is Venice's prize for the best leading performance.
The film is scheduled for theatrical release on Nov. 6, Searchlight said in the same announcement. That date puts it in cinemas before Malkovich takes the stage in Santa Barbara in February.
For fans, this means a rare chance to hear a long-career actor talk through one role in detail, with scenes on the big screen to match.
