Yorkshire strike late to leave champions Nottinghamshire 242-9

Yorkshire's seamers stole the end of a hard-fought opening day at Trent Bridge, leaving Nottinghamshire on 242 for nine at stumps.
Yorkshire won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first on 24 September in Division One of the Rothesay County Championship, according to BBC Sport. That means Nottinghamshire batted first while Yorkshire's bowlers used the fresh pitch. It is a four-day match, scheduled to run until 27 September.
The morning belonged to the bowlers. Nottinghamshire moved to 63 for one after 29 overs, then lost two quick wickets to slip to 80 for three. In cricket's shorthand, the second number is wickets lost out of ten. Three down early on day one leaves a batting side under pressure.
Haseeb Hameed and Jack Haynes steadied the innings. Hameed made 71 and Haynes made 48, and together they added 108 runs for the fourth wicket. That partnership took Nottinghamshire to 176 for four at tea. Then it slipped.
Yorkshire took five wickets in the final session. Four of those came in the final 11 overs. Ben Cliff led the way with four wickets for 39 runs, while Ben Coad took two for 42. Short, sharp spells did the damage. The tail held on to reach the close with one wicket left.
There was context behind both dressing rooms. Nottinghamshire arrived as the 2025 County Championship champions but had lost to Sussex at Hove the previous week. Yorkshire had beaten Somerset at Headingley in their last outing.
What makes this stand out is the timing of the strikes. Nottinghamshire had done the hard work through the afternoon. At 176 for four, a score past 300 looked likely. Yorkshire refused to let the game drift.
Three days remain. Nottinghamshire will want their last pair to add what they can in the morning. Yorkshire will want to finish the job quickly and then bat big.
