Madonna to Open 2026 VMAs as Swift Takes New Directing Honour
Madonna will open the 43rd annual MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday, Sept. 27 in Los Angeles, where Taylor Swift will accept the first-ever Artist Director Honors and premiere her new video for "Patient Zero."
Producer Van Toffler confirmed both bookings in an interview published Sept. 24, setting up a night that puts two of MTV's most awarded names on the same stage. The ceremony will be held in Los Angeles, according to TheWrap. Swift's video debut and new honour were first detailed by Billboard.
Madonna enters the night as the most-nominated artist of this year's VMAs. The nominations cover her Confessions II album and its accompanying singles and videos. She has history with the show's top video prize. She received the Video Vanguard award, MTV's lifetime achievement honour for video work, in 1986.
Swift's role is in two parts. She will collect the Artist Director Honors, a new award being given for the first time. She will then introduce "Patient Zero" to viewers with its first play on the broadcast.
The show will also look back as well as forward. Nirvana and George Michael will receive tributes during the telecast, and Dolly Parton will be honoured. Country singer Kacey Musgraves will perform as part of the tribute to Parton, as reported by Billboard.
Behind the broadcast is Gunpowder & Sky, the production company staging this year's VMAs. Toffler, its chief executive, is serving as producer of the show.
