Cody Gakpo volleyed home in the 92nd minute to earn the Netherlands a 1-1 draw with Germany in the Nations League on 24 September. Reuters

The late strike at the Johan Cruijff ArenA in Amsterdam denied Jürgen Klopp victory in his first match as Germany head coach. It also denied Xavi a winning start in his first match in charge of the Netherlands. The Guardian

Amsterdam erupted. Substitute Ruben van Bommel, on for his Netherlands debut, curled a cross with the outside of his boot from the left. Gakpo met it full on the volley to beat Marc-André ter Stegen. The move started after Serge Gnabry gave the ball away deep in the Dutch half. The Guardian

Germany had led through Felix Nmecha. Debutant right-back Philipp Treu crossed low from the right for Karim Adeyemi, whose close-range shot was blocked. Nmecha reacted fastest to sweep in the rebound and give Klopp's new side the lead.

The Dutch thought they had scored earlier. Virgil van Dijk glanced a header into the net, but the referee ruled it out. Brian Brobbey was judged to have fouled Ter Stegen as the cross came in.

Klopp's night was also shaped by injury. Jamal Musiala felt his thigh in the warm-up and was replaced in the starting line-up by Nadiem Amiri. Kai Havertz then left the game on the half-hour. Klopp said afterwards he expected both players to at least miss Germany's match against Greece on Sunday.

The Nations League is UEFA's competition for national teams, played between World Cups and European Championships. This was a high-profile opening for both coaches, and for long spells it looked like Klopp would take the points.

What makes this stand out is the timing. Two of the most recognisable coaches in club football started their international careers against each other. Both picked debutants. Both debutants shaped a goal.

For fans, this means a shared point and plenty to debate. The Netherlands found a way back late. Germany found a new scorer but lost two key attackers. The rematch just got more interesting.
