Bristol Bears have secured hooker Gabriel Oghre on a new contract.

The 28-year-old has made 63 appearances and scored 26 tries since joining the club in 2023, according to BBC Sport. Bristol have not confirmed the length of the new deal.

Oghre plays at hooker. That is the front-row forward who throws the ball in at the lineout, the contest used to restart play after the ball goes out, and packs down between the two props in the scrum. It is one of rugby union's most physical jobs, with tackling, carrying and throwing all in the same shift.

His scoring record stands out. A try is worth five points for grounding the ball over the tryline. Twenty-six tries in 63 games works out at better than one every three matches. That is sharp going for a forward.

He missed the end of last season after twisting a knee away at Newcastle in April. Surgery followed and kept him out of the run-in. He recovered in time to rejoin the squad for the start of the 2026-27 Premiership campaign, England's top division of club rugby union.

Oghre won his one England cap to date against the United States in July 2025. A cap means a senior international appearance. Before Bristol, he played for Wasps, Leicester and Bordeaux-Begles. Bristol announced the extension under the title 'England international Gabriel Oghre extends Bears stay' on 24 September.

For supporters, the appeal is clear. Bristol keep a proven finisher who knows the club's patterns. Pat Lam, the club's director of rugby and the man in charge of playing style and recruitment, retains an experienced option in the middle of the front row. Oghre gets continuity after a disrupted spring.
