St Helens have a new half-back for 2027. Sean O'Sullivan will join the club from Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs. The Bulldogs have released the 28-year-old from the final year of his contract to allow the switch to Super League, BBC Sport reported on 25 September.

A half-back in rugby league is one of the chief playmakers. He steers the team around the field, does much of the kicking and decides when to pass, run or probe for a gap. It is a thinking position as much as a running one.

O'Sullivan knows his way around. He has previously played for Sydney Roosters, Brisbane Broncos, New Zealand Warriors, Penrith Panthers and the Dolphins before his time at Canterbury. That is six clubs in Australia and New Zealand's NRL, the top professional league on that side of the world.

St Helens play in Super League, the top professional league in England. The move takes O'Sullivan from one elite competition to another. The club has confirmed the deal on its own website under the headline 'Sean O'Sullivan is a Saint'.

He is the second player to sign since Kevin Walters was announced as head coach. Walters takes charge of a squad in transition. St Helens missed out on the Super League play-offs — the end-of-season shootout between the top sides to decide the champions — for the first time.

For supporters, this points to a rebuild around game control. League is built on sets of six tackles to make ground. A calm half-back helps a team finish those sets well, kick to the right places and stay patient. New voices in those key roles can change the feel of a side quickly.

What makes this stand out is the experience O'Sullivan brings. He has worked under different coaches and systems and played alongside different spines. Saints will start pre-season for 2027 with that knowledge in the building.
