Australia meet Brazil in historic Townsville friendly to open new cycle

Australia faced Brazil in Townsville on Friday, 25 September 2026. It was the first men's A international ever played in the city. The stakes were simple: a fresh start for both teams.
The match at Queensland Country Bank Stadium was the first of two friendlies in Queensland. A friendly is a full international with caps awarded, but with no points or qualification on the line. Kick-off was at 8:00pm local time, with gates opening at 6:30pm, according to Queensland Country Bank Stadium.
The second game follows quickly. Australia and Brazil meet again on Tuesday, 29 September at Lang Park in Brisbane, better known as Suncorp Stadium. Both matches kick off at 8pm AEST and have been staged as the Queensland Football Series, according to ABC.
For Australia, this is where the next cycle begins. The Socceroos are using the Brazil double-header to start preparations for the 2027 Asian Cup, the continental championship. They arrived here after a painful exit at the 2026 World Cup, knocked out on penalties by Egypt in the round of 32, according to The Guardian.
Brazil came to Queensland with their own reset under way. They beat Japan 2-1 in the knockout phase at the World Cup, then lost 2-1 to Norway in the round of 16. The team is led by head coach Carlo Ancelotti. Brazil were listed as the official home side for the Queensland fixtures.
Australia head coach Tony Popovic picked a squad built for looking forward. He omitted captain Maty Ryan from the 25-player group. In total, 10 members of his World Cup squad were left out.
Injuries forced two more changes. Mohamed Toure and Alex Robertson dropped out of the squad. Riley McGree and Patrick Yazbek returned after time on the sidelines.
Then came the new faces. Jacob Chapman, Kealey Adamson, Eli Adams, Yaya Dukuly and Marcus Younis earned first-time call-ups. Kasey Bos and teenage defender Dylan Leonard were also in line for debuts.
Brazil will not linger in Australia. After the second match in Brisbane, they are scheduled to play India on 3 October.
What makes this stand out is the setting as much as the opposition. Townsville had never hosted the men's senior national teams before. For one night, a city known for rugby league got football's most famous yellow shirt on its own turf, with Brisbane to come four days later.
