Russell storms to Baku pole as leader Antonelli hits the wall

George Russell took pole position for Mercedes at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, beating Ferrari's Charles Leclerc by 0.837 seconds. Oscar Piastri qualified third for McLaren. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli will start 16th after crashing in the first part of qualifying, as reported by BBC Sport.

Antonelli, Russell's team-mate at Mercedes, hit the inside wall at Turn One on his second lap of Q1. Q1 is the opening qualifying session, where the slowest drivers are knocked out and sent to the back of the grid. He broke his left-front suspension, and Mercedes engineer Peter Bonnington told him to park the damaged car.

Behind the top two, Isack Hadjar qualified fourth for Red Bull. Lando Norris was fifth for McLaren. Lewis Hamilton took sixth, ahead of Pierre Gasly and Max Verstappen.

The pole was Russell's first since the Austrian Grand Prix at the end of June. Pole position means first place on the starting grid, with a clear view into the opening corner. Leclerc was closest, but more than eight tenths back.

Further back, Carlos Sainz delivered Williams its first top-10 qualifying performance of the year. The team brought a new chassis to Baku, the central structure that holds the driver and engine, which got the car down to the weight limit for the first time this season. Williams had started the year as much as 25kg over the limit, and carrying extra weight costs time on every straight and in every corner. Alex Albon qualified 13th.

What makes this stand out is the contrast inside one garage. Russell has clear air, the racing line of his choice and control of the start. Antonelli arrived in Baku leading the championship and now faces a climb through traffic, where every overtake carries risk and every point must be earned the hard way.

Qualifying took place on Friday. Sunday's race will decide how much Russell can convert from the front, and how much damage Antonelli can limit from the midfield.
