Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development, writer confirms

Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still in development.
Rik Godwin, a lead writer and associate narrative director at Ubisoft Bordeaux, confirmed the status in posts on social media. He said he had worked on the project for the past few months in a support and consultant role. He added that he had Ubisoft's permission to disclose the work, Eurogamer reported on 25 September 2026.
Godwin is best known to many players as a writer on Assassin's Creed Shadows. His update on Beyond Good & Evil 2 was first shared via social media, IGN reported on 24 September 2026. He has not announced a release date. No new footage or platforms were confirmed.
The project has a long history. It was originally unveiled in 2008. In 2022, it overtook Duke Nukem Forever as the longest game in development in the Guinness Book of Records.
The confirmation follows a difficult period for Ubisoft. Insider Gaming reported on 21 January 2026 that Beyond Good & Evil 2 had survived the company's latest round of project cancellations. Ubisoft has not issued a new release window.
So what is the game? Ubisoft describes it as an action-adventure role-playing game, a story-driven game with exploration and combat where players build up a character, playable solo or in co-op, meaning cooperative play with friends, Ubisoft states. It is a prequel, a story set before the events of the original Beyond Good & Evil, and is billed as a spiritual successor to that cult classic.
Players start as a lowly pirate and aim to become a legendary pirate. The setting is System 3, a planetary system home to human and hybrid clones. System 3 is controlled by the oppressive Established Order. Combat takes place both on planets and in space, in what Ubisoft calls a boundless and seamless online playground.
Ubisoft Montpellier is leading development alongside its community of fans. The Space Monkey Program invites community members to contribute to development. A separate HITRECORD partnership allowed fans to collaborate with the team on visual assets and music. Ubisoft said in an update on 18 September 2020 that work was well underway and focused on core development and production milestones.
For fans, this means one thing. After years without a firm date, the clearest signal is a current developer saying the work continues.
