Silent Hill Goes First-Person While Resident Evil Splits Horror and Action

SILENT HILL: Townfall launched September 24, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and PC via Steam and Epic Games Store. Konami describes it as an immersive first-person horror entry in the series. Konami
A new town and a new view
The game is set in a quiet Scottish town, not the Maine town that gave the series its name. The fog, isolation and small community with buried history move over intact. The full game is played in first-person, so the player sees through the character's eyes. That is a change for Silent Hill, which in the past used fixed cameras or a view from behind the shoulder. Fear now comes more from blocked sightlines, where walls and fog hide what is near, and from directional sound that signals where danger sits.
Konami pointed to a return for the franchise with announcements in 2022. Silent Hills, a planned reboot led by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro, was cancelled in 2015. The current plan is spread across several games rather than one. Silent Hill f is a spinoff set in Japan. Townfall keeps the present-day Western setting. The Verge
The Verge, in a feature published September 25, 2026, describes Silent Hill and Resident Evil as gaming's two biggest horror franchises, both at the height of their powers. That wording is the outlet's. The release lists on both sides are full.
Two Resident Evil heroes, two ways to play
Resident Evil Requiem from Capcom pairs two leads with two styles. FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft anchors terrifying survival horror gameplay, where ammo is short and avoidance matters. Leon S. Kennedy anchors pulse-pounding action gameplay, with faster movement and heavier fights. Capcom puts that split front and center in its materials for the title. Resident Evil
Koshi Nakanishi directs Resident Evil Requiem. He said balancing action and horror has been a huge challenge. BBC The trade-off is familiar to developers. Ammo supply, limited save points, enemy counts, movement speed and how fast enemies fall must be set one way for slow exploration and another way for heavy combat.
The pattern here will be familiar to people who make systems. Splitting the leads keeps those competing demands apart. It does not remove them.
More devices and a new film
Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 are coming to Nintendo Switch 2 on October 16, 2026. Capcom lists Resident Evil 7 biohazard as Available Now for Apple devices. Capcom
The Resident Evil film reboot titled Resident Evil was directed by Weapons director Zach Cregger. It centers on a hapless delivery driver instead of Leon or Claire. It had the best box office opening in franchise history. The Verge
The broader context here is that horror is running parallel technical tests rather than settling on one. Townfall bets on first-person presence on PS5 and PC, where detailed lighting, thick volumetric fog and spatial audio, or sound placed in 3D space, carry how players sense threats. Requiem keeps low-supply survival tuning for one story while letting movement, weapons and fight pacing run faster in the other. The Switch 2 and Apple ports stretch the same series across very different limits on heat, graphics power and controls.
In my view, that split is healthy. I have watched my own kids react differently by camera and controller. First-person produced avoidance. Third-person produced mastery. Developers can now measure both without forcing a single compromise build. The risk is wider scope and more testing. The payoff is a clearer sense of what truly scares players rather than what only startles them, and tools for stealth and exploration that carry over to other kinds of games.
