A television comedy about rehearsing real life has helped change aviation law in the United States.

The US Senate has passed two bills on pilot mental health after the second season of HBO's The Rehearsal made airline safety its central subject, Deadline reported on 25 September 2026. Season 2 campaigned to improve pilots' mental health. It focussed on safety in the cockpit, including communication between pilots and co-pilots.

The two measures are the John A. Hauser Mental Health in Aviation Act and the Aviation Medication Transparency Act. Both were introduced as bipartisan bills, meaning they were backed by both major parties, by Republican Senator John Hoeven and Democratic Senator Tammy Duckworth.

The Hauser Act aims to tackle stigma around mental health among aviators. It would do so through increased funding for aeromedical examiners, the doctors who assess whether pilots are fit to fly, and for mental health training.

The bill is named for John A. Hauser, a student pilot who died by suicide in 2021 while training. He left a letter urging changes to the aeromedical system so pilots do not suffer in silence.

The second bill is narrower and practical. The Aviation Medication Transparency Act seeks to give aviators and their medical providers clarity on which medications can and cannot be taken while flying. The Federal Aviation Administration already encourages pilots to seek help, stating that most mental-health conditions, if treated, do not disqualify a pilot from flying, according to the FAA.

Creator and star Nathan Fielder said former National Transportation Safety Board member John Goglia texted him with the news. A pilot mental health bill stuck in the House for years had finally passed and moved to the Senate. Fielder said Goglia suggested the programme had pushed young staffers to act.

That House measure is listed as H.R.2591, the Mental Health in Aviation Act of 2025, according to Congress.gov. It would require the FAA Administrator to revise regulations for certain people carrying out aviation activities.

The link between comedy and cockpit was direct. The season 2 finale included Fielder flying a Boeing 737 passenger jet. Fielder is now working on a third season of The Rehearsal.

What makes this stand out is the chain of jobs involved. A writers' room and a crew of hundreds made a series about flight safety. That series was watched by junior staff in Washington. Now two laws are one step closer for the pilots they were written about.
