Common receives inaugural Artist Impact Award from SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange

Common has received the inaugural Artist Impact Award from SAG-AFTRA and SoundExchange. The presentation took place on Sept. 24 at The Luckman Club/Soho West Hollywood, with the two organisations honouring his work across music, film and television Billboard.
The award honours an artist whose work crosses creative boundaries. It recognises contributions across music, film, television and media that have shaped culture, expanded artistic possibility and inspired new forms of storytelling.
The presentation was staged as an intimate luncheon SAG-AFTRA. Andra Day, Rebecca Ferguson, Janelle Monáe and Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson served as the host committee for the event.
The pairing behind the prize reflects how performers are paid. SoundExchange collects royalties for the digital use of recorded music and passes on 5% of its annual collections, roughly $50 million, to SAG-AFTRA. That money goes to non-featured performers, including background singers and session musicians whose playing and singing support headline acts.
Common, the Chicago-born rapper, actor and writer, is a Grammy, Oscar and Emmy winner. SAG-AFTRA said the award recognised his impact on culture spanning decades.
He has continued to work outside music and screen. He recently launched Jeffery Park, a limited-edition wine brand created with Argentine winemaker Karim Mussi and delivery company Gopuff.
What makes this stand out is the joint billing. A union and a royalties body do not often create an award together. Here they used it to link a high-profile career with the lesser-seen performers who keep sessions running.
