Rio Ngumoha will have to wait for his competitive England bow.

The 18-year-old Liverpool forward was not named in the matchday squad for the Nations League opener against Spain on Saturday, according to BBC Sport. It is a sharp pause after a very fast rise.

England host Spain at Wembley at 19:45 BST on Saturday 26 September. The game is a Group A3 tie in the Nations League, UEFA's competition that runs alongside major-tournament qualifying, and will be shown live on ITV, according to England Football.

Head coach Thomas Tuchel had named Ngumoha in a full England squad for the first time. The call-up followed a summer in which Ngumoha travelled as one of five extra young players with the senior group to a pre-World Cup training camp in Florida.

He made his senior debut in the 1-0 friendly win over New Zealand. That single cap made him the fifth-youngest player to represent England.

Liverpool supporters know the backstory. Ngumoha became the club's youngest-ever starter when he debuted aged 16 against Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup in 2024-25. He then scored a late winner on his Premier League debut in a 3-2 win at Newcastle. This season he has made three league appearances, with only one as a starter.

What makes this stand out is the timing. Ngumoha has said he believes goals and assists can earn him a place at Euro 2028, according to Yahoo Sports. Missing Saturday does not end that push. It shows how crowded the road to a tournament can be for a teenager still fighting for club starts.

Tuchel is already short of options. Tino Livramento, Kobbie Mainoo, Cole Palmer, Marcus Rashford and Declan Rice were all ruled out of the forthcoming Nations League fixtures, according to England Football. That opened doors elsewhere in the September and October group, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Lewis Hall, Jarrad Branthwaite, Myles Lewis-Skelly and Alex Scott all selected.

There is a familiar face on the other side too. Spain can call on Victor Munoz, the forward who joined Liverpool in the summer of 2026 as the club's first signing under Andoni Iraola.

For fans, this means patience. One omission is not a verdict. For an 18-year-old with a debut goal at Newcastle already to his name, making the senior squad was the step. Wembley will have to wait a little longer.
