Pirkko and Taina are brewing again.

Finland's Oscar submission 100 Litres of Gold is getting a sequel titled 200 Litres of Gold, Variety reported on 26 September 2026. Teemu Nikki will direct the new film. It continues the story built around sahti, the traditional Finnish beer at the centre of the first film.

The original found a wide audience at home. It finished 2025 as the most-watched local film in Finland. Finland then put it forward as its Oscar submission, the film chosen to represent the country in the race for best international feature.

That choice is about representation, not a nomination. Each country selects one title for consideration by the Academy. Selection usually reflects strong support from local audiences and the local industry.

Elina Knihtilä and Pirjo Lonka will return as Pirkko and Taina. The pair play the sisters whose brewing drives the plot. Their return keeps the sequel focused on the same family relationship. The story stays with them, rather than starting over with new characters.

In 200 Litres of Gold, Pirkko and Taina make sahti for the Finnish Sahti Championship. The contest brings brewers together to have their recipes judged side by side. For the sisters, it sets a clear goal and a firm deadline.

For readers meeting it for the first time, sahti is a farmhouse brew made in small batches and drunk fresh. It is closely tied to village life in Finland. That local character is why a championship carries weight in the story.

Jani Pösö produces through It's Alive Films. The company is the production company behind the films. That gives the follow-up the same producing base as the original, with the same team guiding the project from script to screen.

A separate American version is also in development. Writer Dennis Lehane is working on a U.S. remake of 100 Litres of Gold. The remake would retell the Finnish story for an American audience. It sits apart from Nikki's sequel, which moves the original characters forward.

What makes this stand out is the restraint. Many follow-ups change the cast, the place and the tone. This one keeps two sisters, one drink and one contest. More litres. Same sisters.
