Some Xbox players have pre-ordered Grand Theft Auto 6 without spending cash, covering the full cost with converted loyalty points. Engadget reported on Sept. 26, 2026 that Reddit users shared success stories of free pre-orders earned through Microsoft perks Engadget.

The Standard Edition sells for $80. The Ultimate Edition sells for $100 and adds exclusive cars, weapons and shops, plus extra side activities Engadget. The math works out to about 1,000 Microsoft Rewards points per $1. That means about 80,000 points for Standard and 100,000 points in gift card credit for Ultimate.

Two examples show the routes. Engadget reported one player got GTA 6 free with card points from the Xbox Mastercard. A second player got the Ultimate Edition only by building up Microsoft Rewards through everyday tasks Engadget. Both took time. Neither came from a single action.

Earning runs through two separate systems. Xbox Mastercard purchases earn card points, with the largest returns from Microsoft Store purchases, streaming subscriptions and food delivery. That card system is separate from Rewards. The Xbox Mastercard FAQ states 100 card points equal $1 when redeemed Xbox Support.

Microsoft Rewards, Microsoft's loyalty program for play and search activity, works differently. In the Xbox mobile app, Quests are found by tapping the profile picture and opening the Rewards tab. Those Quests pay out for playing on PC and console, using the Xbox app, and keeping up weekly playing streaks Engadget. The Microsoft Rewards dashboard adds points for daily polls and quizzes and for Bing searches. Xbox states members can complete daily, weekly, and monthly quests to earn points Xbox Support.

The Game Pass plan changes the earn rate. Premium and PC Only subscribers earn twice the Microsoft Rewards points from Quests. Ultimate subscribers earn four times as many points from Quests Engadget. Xbox describes the same multipliers for play and shopping activity, stating Ultimate members earn 4x Rewards points when playing and shopping and Premium members earn 2x Xbox. Xbox also states Rewards vary by Game Pass plan and Rewards Level, and point values vary by local market currency, Rewards level, and the number of points redeemed Xbox.

Redemption centers on store credit. Xbox states Rewards points can be redeemed for sweepstakes entries, gift cards, and more Xbox Support. The catalog lists 200 points for one sweepstakes entry, 1,000 points for a $1 donation to a cause, 5,000 points for up to a $5 Xbox Gift Card, and custom amounts up to $100 for use at the Store Xbox. Xbox plans to let members spend Rewards points directly at Store checkout on Xbox console. The Rewards hub lets members track progress, claim points, view limited-time offers, and find more ways to earn across devices.

An earlier estimate set expectations lower. In June, PureXbox noted Xbox Rewards points could be used to cut the price of GTA 6 and estimated the program could provide around $40 off by launch PureXbox. The September reports of full $80 and $100 redemptions show what months of steady stacking can produce.

The broader context here is platform economics tied to habit. Microsoft trades credit usable only in its own store for attention, repeat visits, and steady use of Xbox and Bing. Polls, searches, streaks and tiered multipliers cost little one by one but add up over months, and outside spending on subscriptions and delivery feeds into the same points balance. In my view, that is a fair exchange for players who already have time and a Game Pass subscription, and it leaves the shelf price unchanged for everyone else while letting regular use function as payment.
