Kent are going up. They beat Gloucestershire by eight wickets at the St Lawrence Ground in Canterbury on 26 September 2026 to secure promotion to Division One of the County Championship, England's four-day domestic competition played over two innings per side. BBC Sport

The champagne could be readied early. Northamptonshire lost to Middlesex at Lord's, which confirmed Kent's promotion before Kent even started their final chase.

Kent had done the hard work with ball and bat. After winning the toss and choosing to field, they bowled Gloucestershire out for 229 in the first innings. James Bracey made 86 for the visitors, while Matt Milnes took 4-55.

Kent replied with 353. Ben Compton led the way with 126, giving the hosts a first-innings lead of 124. That cushion shaped the rest of the game.

Gloucestershire fought harder second time around. Kamran Dhariwal scored 66 in their 241, but Milnes was too good again. He took 5-33 to finish with nine wickets in the match and leave Kent needing only 118 to win.

The chase was calm. Zak Crawley struck 44 and Sam Northeast finished 49 not out as Kent reached 120-2. No late nerves. Just a clean finish in front of a home crowd.

It was Kent's eighth win of the County Championship season. They took 22 points from the match to Gloucestershire's three points.

What makes this stand out is the timing. Kent went into the final week of the season in second place in Division Two, four points clear, knowing the top two go up. They did not leave it to mathematics or weather. They won it.

For fans, this means top-flight county cricket returns to Canterbury next summer. Longer days, harder tests, and a first-division table. After a season built on Compton's runs and Milnes's wickets, Kent earned it.
