Vollering outsprints Niewiadoma to take world title in Montreal

Demi Vollering is the new women's world road race champion after outsprinting Poland's Kasia Niewiadoma in Montreal.
The Dutch rider took the rainbow jersey on 26 September 2026 with victory in a two-up uphill finish at the end of the longest women's world championship road race ever held. She entered the race as the Tour de France Femmes champion and delivered under the weight of sole leadership for the Netherlands The Guardian.
The race covered 180.1km on a lapping circuit in Montréal, Canada. The 2026 UCI Road World Championships run from 20 to 27 September.
Vollering made the decisive move early. She attacked with 40 kilometres remaining on the steepest climb of the circuit, trying to split the peloton — the main pack of riders — before the finish.
She was caught with less than 20 kilometres to go. No panic. She reset, then took control with Niewiadoma on the final lap.
They hit the uphill run to the line together. With less than 200 metres left they were side by side. Vollering timed it perfectly. She found the extra kick and took the title.
Vollering had arrived in Canada as the lone team leader of the Dutch squad, keeping her plans quiet before the start Cyclingnews. The Netherlands has often shared responsibility between several stars. This time the team said the race was for her.
It caps a huge season. In the same year she added a second Tour de France title alongside the Giro Women, Liège-Bastogne-Liège and the Tour of Flanders The Guardian.
What makes this stand out is the turnaround. A year ago Vollering finished third at the 2025 Worlds in a time of 44'14''07, 1'05'' down, when Canada's Magdeleine Vallieres took gold on home soil Olympics.com. In Montreal she was the rider everyone watched, and she still found a way to win.
Earlier in the week, Switzerland's Marlen Reusser retained the women's elite individual time trial rainbow jersey in Montreal in 50 minutes, 24.44 seconds Reuters.
