Pablo Larraín brings Mariana Enriquez ghost stories to screen in My Sad Dead

Pablo Larraín has turned three stories by Argentine writer Mariana Enriquez into a ghost story for the screen, My Sad Dead.
The film, whose Spanish title is Mis muertos tristes, was reviewed by Variety on 26 September 2026. It is described by the publication as a ghost story involving ghosts. It arrives as a feature version of Larraín's four-part Netflix horror miniseries, according to Variety, and is produced by Fabula.
The story centres on Ema, played by Mercedes Morán, Variety reports. Ema is a recently retired doctor who can see and hear the dead, according to Variety. She is grappling with grief after her mother's death, Deadline reports.
She is trying to hold two things together. She tries to protect her neglected community and to connect with her family, according to IndieWire, which published its own review on 24 September. That family includes her estranged sister Lidia, played by Alejandra Flechner, and Lidia's teenage daughter Julia, played by Carolina Álvarez.
The setting is specific. The action takes place in the Piedrabuena neighbourhood of Buenos Aires, with photography by Sergio Armstrong, Variety reports. Piedrabuena is a large housing estate in the south-west of the Argentine capital, and the address matters to how Ema's work as a doctor and neighbour plays out.
For viewers new to the names behind it, context helps. Larraín previously directed Jackie, Spencer and Maria, according to Variety. Netflix previously partnered with him on The Count (El Conde) and My Sad Dead, according to Variety. Larraín has described Enriquez's writing as particularly visual, brilliant and dangerous, Variety reported.
What makes this stand out in a busy horror calendar is the chain behind it. A short-story writer known for stark urban tales. A director known for portraits of famous women. A retired doctor who listens to the dead, and a family that has stopped listening to each other.
