James Trafford finally got his England chance, and it came in a 3-2 Nations League defeat to Spain on 26 September.

The Leeds United goalkeeper wore No.12 for his competitive debut, with England naming him in goal for the home tie against Spain, according to England Football. Spain took the win. England took a look at the future.

Manager Thomas Tuchel had set out the plan before kick-off. Trafford and Jordan Pickford would get “two consecutive matches each” during the international break, as reported by the BBC. The Nations League, a tournament played between World Cups and European Championships, is being used as a testing ground.

That says everything about Pickford’s standing. He made his England debut in 2017 and has been first choice ever since. He now has 91 caps and 46 clean sheets, games without conceding a goal.

He also made history this summer. When he started England’s 2026 World Cup quarter-final win over Norway, he passed Peter Shilton as England’s most-capped goalkeeper at World Cups.

So this is not a dropping. Tuchel said Pickford had done “absolutely nothing wrong” and that the autumn was about finding out “how far” Trafford can go.

Trafford’s road here has twisted. He came through Manchester City’s academy, then joined Burnley for an initial £15m in summer 2023. His first Premier League season was brutal. He conceded 67 goals in 28 matches and lost his place late in the 2023-24 campaign.

Then came the response. Burnley conceded just 16 goals in their promotion season of 2024-25, with Trafford central to it. City bought him back for £27m last summer, only to sign Gianluigi Donnarumma four weeks later. Trafford slipped to second choice, although he still started both the FA Cup final and Carabao Cup final for City.

Leeds then paid a deal worth up to £45m to make him their No.1. He had played only 32 top-flight games before that move. This season he has already kept two clean sheets, with Leeds sitting fifth in the Premier League at the time of the Spain game.

There was a neat echo in the opposition. Trafford won the 2023 U21 European Championship with England under Lee Carsley, saving a stoppage-time penalty in the final against Spain. Three years on, Spain were again the opponents for another first.

What makes this stand out is the rarity of the moment. England do not change goalkeepers lightly. Pickford has given the team almost a decade of calm, while Trafford, at 23, offers a glimpse of the next decade.

For fans, this means a straight contest over the next few games. Two matches each. Same shirt on the line. The crowd will get to judge both with their own eyes.
