Godzilla Minus Zero premieres as franchise's first R-rated film

Godzilla has never been R-rated in 72 years. That run is over.
Godzilla Minus Zero, the sequel to 2023's Godzilla Minus One, held its world premiere on 26 September at Alice Tully Hall during the New York Film Festival, as reported by Variety.
It is directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who also directed Godzilla Minus One. The new story is set in 1949, two years after the events of the earlier film, and continues with the Shikishima family, according to Film at Lincoln Center. The running time is 135 minutes.
The big talking point is the rating. The film is rated R for violent content and bloody images. In the United States, that rating means viewers under 17 need a parent or adult guardian. It is the first entry in the long-running Godzilla series to receive an R rating.
Yamazaki told the premiere audience that the rating was essential to the film. Censoring or cutting certain scenes to get a softer rating was not an option.
Festival organisers had given the film a prime slot. Film at Lincoln Center announced on 4 August that Godzilla Minus Zero would world-premiere as the Spotlight Gala of the 64th New York Film Festival, as noted by Film at Lincoln Center. The Gala is a showcase evening screening reserved for high-profile titles. The 64th edition ran from 25 September to 12 October 2026.
Early word was strong. The film earned rave first reactions after its press screening at the festival, according to Variety. Details were scarce. Yamazaki asked the audience at Alice Tully Hall not to share spoilers on social media.
For fans, this means a bloodier Godzilla awaits, and one the director did not want trimmed down. The rest will have to wait for the screen.
