England knocked on Spain's door 36 times, but the world champions still walked off with Wembley

England got into Spain's penalty box 36 times at Wembley. They still lost 3-2.
The world champions came from behind to win the opening Group A3 game of the 2026-27 Nations League on 26 September 2026. England led 2-1 when Harry Kane hit the bar with a 54th-minute penalty that would have made it 3-1, and Spain punished two defensive errors to take the points Reuters.
Mikel Oyarzabal scored the winner for Spain. The victory stretched Spain's unbeaten run to 39 games US News.
The scoreline only tells half of it. According to analysis published on 28 September, England's 36 touches in Spain's box is the second-highest total in normal time in a 133-match sample stretching back to Euro 2016 The Guardian.
That is rare territory. Spain conceded an average of only 9.5 opposition penalty-area touches per 90 minutes at the 2026 World Cup. Belgium, France and Argentina managed 38 between them across Spain's final three rounds of that tournament. England managed 36 in one night at Wembley.
Only two teams have done more against Spain in that near 10-year sample. Germany had 45 in the Euro 2024 quarter-final, although that game went to extra time. France had 42 in normal time in the Nations League semi-final they lost 5-4.
Getting there was not the problem. Doing damage once there was. England produced 0.95 non-penalty expected goals, a measure of chance quality with penalties removed. Germany produced 2.15 and France produced 1.95 in those high-touch games. England needed 5.1 box touches for every shot from inside the area, rising to 5.8 once Kane's penalty is taken out.
Bukayo Saka led the way with 10 touches in Spain's box on his own. For context, Argentina managed eight in 120 minutes of the 2026 World Cup final, two fewer than Saka managed at Wembley. But four of the five passes Saka made from inside the area went backwards, outside the box and away from goal.
Anthony Gordon was next for England with five box touches. Morgan Gibbs-White was the only England substitute to complete a pass inside Spain's area, with one pass in the 95th minute.
Spain were quiet by their own standards at the other end. Their 15 penalty-box touches was less than half their 32.5 per-90 average at the World Cup. They scored three times anyway.
What makes this stand out for supporters is the strange split. England found a way through the midfield of the world champions, the same Spain side they faced in the Euro 2024 final, yet the final ball never came. Spain barely visited England's box and left with the win. That is football as shared memory in one night: hope, noise, a missed penalty, then silence.
