The BBC has ordered more of Ludwig, with a third series and a Christmas special on the way.

The recommission, meaning the broadcaster has ordered new episodes, follows a strong ratings run for series two. The comedy-drama, which airs on the BBC in the UK and on BritBox, stars David Mitchell as John Taylor, alongside Anna Maxwell Martin and Izuka Hoyle.

Series two opened with an audience of 9.1 million, according to Barb data reported by overnights.tv. That figure makes Ludwig the UK's most-watched scripted launch of 2026 so far, Deadline reported on 28 September 2026.

The numbers put it ahead of two other big scripted titles. The Night Manager series two, for the BBC and Prime Video, was watched by 8.7 million viewers. BBC comedy-drama Small Prophets was watched by 7.6 million.

The comparison comes with one important note on how audiences are counted. The 13.3 million reported for BBC's The Traitors earlier in 2026 is a consolidated audience, meaning catch-up viewing over several weeks is added in. The 9.1 million for Ludwig is a seven-day-plus total built from the same kind of catch-up count.

Overnights tell a smaller, faster story. That term means people counted on the night of transmission, before catch-up is added. Ludwig series two closed with 1.6 million overnight viewers for its finale.

For viewers, this means there is plenty more puzzle-solving to come. Creator Mark Brotherhood returns with producer Big Talk, and the Christmas special will star David Suchet.

Ludwig already has form with launches. Series one was the BBC's top-rated scripted launch of 2024. Series two has now ranked above long-running BBC scripted titles Call the Midwife and Death in Paradise among the broadcaster's scripted shows of the year in September rankings, Broadcast reported.

The numbers are big. And for the crew behind it, the order keeps the story going.
