Madonna Caps Seven-Win VMAs Night With Hotel-Room Dance

Madonna closed her seven-win night at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards with a 21-second dance in a hotel room alongside Charli xcx and actress Julia Garner.
The clip was posted to Madonna's TikTok after the Sept. 27 ceremony and is set to a remix of "Danceteria Afterhours" from her Confessions II album, according to Billboard.
She had reason to keep dancing. Madonna collected seven awards, the most for any artist that night, taking her career total to 26 VMAs. That puts her behind Taylor Swift on 32 and Beyoncé on 29 on the all-time leaderboard.
Three of the seven were presented during the broadcast: artist of the year, best dance for the Confessions II short film, and best collaboration with Sabrina Carpenter. The remaining four came from categories announced outside the telecast.
She opened the show. She closed the night. The opening slot was Madonna's first VMA performance in 23 years and her fifth time opening the ceremony, built as a medley from Confessions II, as reported by Billboard. Collaborators Sabrina Carpenter and Charli xcx performed with her.
Charli xcx entered from a bathroom stall to sing "Danceteria Afterhours," according to Yahoo. The staging also included cameos from actor Seth Rogen, Garner and actor Debi Mazar, with singer Sombr appearing as well, as noted by Harper's Bazaar.
The hotel video brought the team back together in miniature. Madonna, Charli and Garner dance close together in evening dress, with no stage lighting and no routine beyond the moment itself.
Garner has her own history with Madonna's story. She was previously set to play the singer in a biopic that now appears to be on permanent pause.
Inside the arena, the cameras found other meetings. Madonna linked up with Swift during the night, while Charli xcx spent time with Troye Sivan and Carpenter, in photographs published by W Magazine.
For fans tracking the Confessions II rollout, the thread ran through the evening. The album supplied the opening medley, the dance winner and the song for the late-night post.
