Sussex have finished third in the top flight of the County Championship, despite starting the season on minus 12 points. Outgoing head coach Paul Farbrace said he is "so proud" of his players after a campaign shaped as much by off-field cuts as on-field cricket, BBC Sport reported.

The numbers are stark. Sussex won seven, drew four and lost three of their 14 matches in Division One, the top tier of England's season-long, four-day domestic competition. They collected 207 points. That total would have put them second. The deduction dropped them to 195, leaving them 10 points behind Somerset.

The penalty came before a ball was bowled. Sussex lost £1.3m in 2025 and were sanctioned with points deductions across all three domestic formats and a player salary cap for 2026. In June, the club said eight players were told they would not be offered new deals at the end of the season in an effort to steady the finances.

Farbrace, 59, took charge at Hove in 2022. He led Sussex back into Division One in 2024 after their spell in the second tier. Before Sussex, he worked as Sri Lanka head coach and as England assistant coach. He has said stepping away from the head-coach role ends 30 years of coaching and will be the last time he leads a team.

Change will continue over the winter. Former Kent coach Matthew Walker takes over as head coach for 2027. Farbrace will stay at the club as director of cricket on a part-time basis. Sussex are also looking for a new batting coach, with Grant Flower moving to Surrey for next season.

The playing squad will look different too. Henry Crocombe, Tom Alsop, George Thomas and Fynn Hudson-Prentice have confirmed they are leaving. Four more departures are expected from the group told in the summer that their contracts would not be renewed.

For fans, this means context matters. Third place does not tell the full story. Second place on points won, third after points lost, with a capped squad and a coach saying goodbye. Sussex were promotion winners two years ago. Now they have held their own among the strongest counties while cutting costs. That is why Farbrace talked about pride rather than what might have been.
