Austria picks Sandra Hüller drama Rose for Oscars race

Austria has chosen Rose, the black-and-white period drama starring Sandra Hüller, as its submission for the international feature Oscar, the Academy Award for films made outside the United States, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
The film is set for a US theatre release on Dec. 11. That date places it in the middle of awards season, when voters are watching contenders.
Rose was directed by Austrian film-maker Markus Schleinzer. It is set in the 17th century, in the aftermath of the Thirty Years' War in Europe.
Hüller plays the titular Rose, an enigmatic soldier and war veteran. The character tries to settle in a rural German community while passing as a man, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Hüller won the Silver Bear for best leading performance at the Berlin International Film Festival for the role. The Silver Bear is one of the top acting prizes awarded at Berlin.
She was previously an Oscar nominee for Anatomy of a Fall. That history gives US audiences a point of reference. No verdict here. Just the record.
Behind the camera, international sales were organised by The Match Factory, which boarded the project early, Screen Daily reported in 2023. The company later released the official trailer for the film.
Hüller and Schleinzer discussed the making of Rose in a new interview published by The Hollywood Reporter on Sept. 28.
For fans, this means two dates to note. Berlin first. Now December in the US. Austria's selection adds another step on that calendar, with the Academy's shortlist process to follow.
