Bolton's Octagon Theatre has announced the first shows for its 60th anniversary season, running from winter 2026 into autumn 2027.

The announcement was published on 29 September 2026, according to details carried by WhatsOnStage. The theatre dates its history to November 1967, when it opened to the public as a producing theatre, meaning it makes its own shows on site, with a fully flexible performance space. It was conceived by five students and their drama lecturer, Robin Pemberton-Billing.

The anniversary programme opens with pantomime. Cinderella: A Fairytale, directed by Sarah Punshon, runs from 20 November 2026 to 9 January 2027. The Christmas run is a key date in most regional theatres' year.

Shakespeare follows in the new year. Romeo and Juliet, directed by Iqbal Khan, runs from 4 to 27 February 2027. It is a co-production, meaning the cost and work are shared between venues, with Derby Theatre and Hull Truck Theatre.

Artistic director Lotte Wakeham directs a new production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Sunset Boulevard. It will be performed by a company of actor-musicians, performers who act and play the score live on stage. The run is from 2 April to 1 May 2027, in a co-production with Royal and Derngate Northampton and York Theatre Royal.

June brings two different titles. Willy Russell's Educating Rita, directed by Kimberley Sykes, runs from 3 June to 3 July 2027. Egging, by Adam Kotwal and directed by Jonnie Riordan, runs from 16 to 26 June 2027.

Later in the season, the Octagon Young Company, the theatre's youth ensemble, presents A Totally Unbiased History Of The Wanderers – According To My Best Mate. Written by Becky Prestwich and directed by Ruth Allison, it runs from 19 to 21 August 2027. The Forger, by Ben Weatherill and directed by Wakeham, runs from 9 September to 2 October 2027 and tells the story of artist Shaun Greenhalgh.

The theatre says the anniversary is centred on three new works billed as the Bolton Trilogy, as reported by the Bury Times. Alongside the stage programme, the Octagon is launching 'social theatre', a new group for adults to make connections and take part in creative activity.

What makes this stand out for regulars is the mix. Familiar large titles sit next to new writing and a youth-company production. For Bolton, it means a full year framed as a birthday, with dates already set into next autumn.
