Dennis Haskins, Saved by the Bell's Mr. Belding, Dies at 75

Dennis Haskins, the actor best known for co-starring across the Saved by the Bell television franchise, has died at age 75.
His agent, Jay Schachter, confirmed the death on Tuesday. It reportedly occurred late Sunday. Authorities have not disclosed a cause of death, according to The Guardian.
Haskins played fictional high school principal Mr Richard Belding. The continuous role defined his screen career and made him recognizable to successive audiences of Saturday-morning and teen television.
The character predated Saved by the Bell itself. Haskins first played Belding in Disney's 1989 show Good Morning, Miss Bliss. NBC then reworked that series into Saved by the Bell, which ran for four seasons beginning in 1989. He stayed with Saved by the Bell: The New Class, playing the principal during its seven-season run beginning in 1993.
Belding functioned as the adult foil, or grown-up contrast, to a rotating ensemble of students. He was earnest, easily flustered, and frequently outmaneuvered. His catchphrase was "Hey, hey, hey, what is going on here?"
Haskins was a native of Chattanooga, Tennessee. He later completed a bachelor of arts degree in theater from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga in 2015.
Beyond Belding, his credits included Hot in Cleveland, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Mad Men and A Million Ways to Die in the West.
Schachter confirmed the death in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter, according to KTIV. "It's a tragic loss," Schachter said. "Everyone loved Mr. Belding." PEOPLE had confirmed the death on Monday, Sept. 28, according to PEOPLE.
The broader context here is durability. Few sitcom authority figures survive a format change, a network change, and a full cast change. Belding did. He moved from Miss Bliss to the original Bell to The New Class without losing his function in the story. That continuity gave NBC a familiar anchor while it refreshed younger leads around him.
Looking at what this means for how the franchise will be remembered, Haskins held a particular position. He was not one of the students. He was the adult in the hallway. For viewers, that made him shorthand for the entire Bayside world. His death closes a direct link to all three iterations of that world at once.
