GameSpot has published a Halloween guide titled 'Want To Dress Up As Bryan From The Resident Evil Movie For Halloween? Here's How'. The guide breaks down the look of Bryan, the courier character played by Austin Abrams. The film is directed by Zach Cregger, with costumes by Caroline Fahrer.

The timing follows a strong run in cinemas. The new film broke the franchise record for biggest opening weekend and has earned more than US$100 million at the North American box office, according to GameSpot. The previous North American record holder was 2010's Resident Evil: Afterlife with US$60 million. The highest-grossing entry in the series remains 2016's Resident Evil: The Final Chapter with US$312 million.

So who is Bryan? Sony Pictures describes him as a medical courier caught in a non-stop race for survival, as listed on Sony Pictures. A review published on 16 September describes him more bluntly as a medical courier with girlfriend problems, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Sony Pictures presents Cregger's film, from the director associated with Weapons and Barbarian, as a reinvention of the Resident Evil franchise.

The costume starts with two high-street layers. The base is a grey hoodie from New Yorker. Over it goes a deep yellow plaid shirt, also from New Yorker.

Then come the workwear details. The guide lists RVCA fatigue pants, worn loose and lived-in. On feet are Nike Jordan Spizike low sneakers, which require customisation to match the screen look. The gloves are altered too, with the thumbs cut off and replaced with stitches.

Three finishing touches sell the distress. The guide recommends using sandpaper to wear down the pants for a courier who has been on the move. Fake blood is made from corn syrup and food colouring. For the prop, the guide suggests using the official Resident Evil movie popcorn bag as a stand-in for Bryan's medical bag.

What makes this stand out is how ordinary it is. No armour. No uniform. Just layered clothes, beaten-up trainers and a paper bag doing prop duty.
