Microsoft announced Mythic Achievements for Xbox on September 29, with Xbox Insiders able to test the feature now. The Verge

A Mythic sits above all other achievements for a game. It unlocks only after a player has earned every other achievement, with no extra tasks to complete.

The idea will be familiar to players who use more than one console. A Mythic works much like a PlayStation Platinum trophy, a final marker for finishing everything rather than one more step along the way. For dedicated achievement hunters, it closes a long-standing gap between the two systems.

Microsoft will award Mythics for past completions. Players who already finished eligible games will get them automatically, without replaying, including Xbox 360 games. The Verge That includes older libraries, because stored unlock records carry forward and still count.

Tracking is changing too. Xbox profiles will gain a gaming tab for Gamerscore milestones, Gamerscore being the running points total tied to achievements, and Mythics. Individual games will show a progress bar toward Mythic status. The Verge

Looking at what this means for players who follow these systems closely, the tracking changes may matter as much as the award itself. A steady progress bar makes it easier to see how close you are, across one game and across a library, without relying on memory, spreadsheets, or third-party trackers.

The broader context here is how Microsoft checks completion. Covering older generations including Xbox 360 suggests the check happens on Xbox's online service, using its existing record of unlocks, rather than requiring updates to each game. In my view, that is the technically interesting part, because it avoids extra work for developers and keeps old records intact.

Looking at what this means for play over time, the design is cautious in a useful way. It adds no new tasks and does not change how Gamerscore points work. It gives existing tasks a clearer endpoint and makes progress easier to see. That tends to keep completion-focused players playing longer, rewarding persistence as well as breadth, and making a profile show depth as well as volume.
