Woman accused in shooting at Rihanna's home found competent to stand trial

A Los Angeles County judge has found Ivanna Lisette Ortiz mentally competent to stand trial in the shooting at Rihanna's home.
Judge Maria Cavalluzzi issued the ruling on Sept. 29 after reviewing psychiatric evaluations, according to ABC News. The decision returns the case to the regular criminal process. Ortiz was ordered to report for a hearing on Wednesday.
Ortiz, 36, of Orlando, Florida, has pleaded not guilty to trying to murder Rihanna, the musician. She faces more than a dozen felony charges stemming from the March shooting at Rihanna's home in the Beverly Crest area near Beverly Hills.
No one was injured. Bullets tore through an Airstream trailer where Rihanna and her partner, rapper A$AP Rocky, were inside at the time. Other shots struck the wall of a nursery where Rihanna's small children were.
Police and prosecutors allege Ortiz fired at least 20 bullets toward Rihanna's property and a neighboring house on March 8. They say she pulled up to the property in a Tesla and pointed an AR-15-style rifle out the window.
Investigators found bullet holes in the trailer and on the exterior wall of the home's second-floor nursery. Three children were in that room with their nanny when the shots were fired.
The charges include 10 counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm, one count for each person prosecutors say was on the two properties. Ortiz is also charged with three counts of shooting at an occupied vehicle or dwelling.
Competent to stand trial means the court found she understands the charges and can help her lawyers defend her. It is not a ruling on guilt or innocence.
After her arrest later that day, Ortiz told investigators, "I wasn't attempting murder." Authorities have said she had no prior police record. Public records show she had been a licensed speech pathologist for more than a decade. Authorities have not discussed a motive or described any connection between Ortiz and Rihanna.
The case had been paused in May while the court looked at her mental health. Judge Shannon K. Cooley ordered psychiatric evaluations and the case was temporarily transferred to a Hollywood mental health court, according to CBS News. The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office first announced the attempted-murder charge in March, saying the defendant fired a semiautomatic rifle at Rihanna's Beverly Crest home, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office.
With competency decided, the prosecution now moves forward.
