OpenAI's $70B Pace and Oracle's AI Cloud Surge, Explained

$70 billion a year is the pace OpenAI reached in late September, and that number moved markets for savers and investors to notice.

On September 29, 2026, its annualized run rate, which takes one recent month of revenue and multiplies it by 12, neared $70 billion, Reuters reported. Enterprise sales, or sales to large companies, had more than doubled since July 2026. Oracle, described as OpenAI's critical computing infrastructure partner that supplies much of its computing power, closed 5.3% higher that day.

Oracle's fiscal first quarter, its latest three-month reporting period, showed total revenues of $19.3 billion, up 30% in U.S. dollars and in constant currency, a measure that removes the effect of exchange rate moves, according to Oracle Investor Relations. Revenue from cloud infrastructure, the business of renting computing and storage over the internet, rose 121% in dollars. Software revenues fell 3% to $5.5 billion. The company said it booked over $30 billion in AI cloud contracts in the quarter, lifting its backlog, or signed work not yet delivered, to $664 billion.

Those September figures looked different from April. On April 28, 2026, OpenAI had missed internal targets for weekly users and revenue in its work toward an IPO, a first public sale of shares, the Wall Street Journal reported. Oracle shares dropped 3.4% to $167.3 in morning trading that day on worries about OpenAI growth, Reuters reported.

OpenAI said it raised $122 billion to accelerate the next phase of AI, OpenAI said. The company said that by the end of 2024 it was generating $1B per quarter and that it was generating $2B in revenue per month. It later announced it completed its recapitalization, a reworking of its ownership and finances, and stated its nonprofit remains in control of the for-profit, OpenAI.

OpenAI stated its products reach more than one billion weekly active users and 2.5 million businesses. ChatGPT Ads reached $1 billion in annualized run rate in less than 200 days after launch.

OpenAI's September 29 news index listed "Towards safety cases for frontier AI training" as Safety news dated Sep 28, 2026, "How we will do better for Australia" and "Lenfest grows landmark program with OpenAI support" as Company news dated Sep 28, 2026, plus "Two years of OpenAI Academy" and "Sam Altman's remarks at the United Nations Security Council" dated Sep 23, 2026. Oracle said it had delivered 75% of total capacity as of September 2026, with the remainder delivering in subsequent quarters. Its newsroom features "Oracle Extends Fusion Agentic Applications with Introduction of Fusion Claw.", "Oracle Health Advances Revenue Cycle Management with AI.", "Oracle to Advance Cancer Care with New Oncology EHR." and "Real-World Data and AI Capabilities in Oracle Life Sciences Data Intelligence Help Accelerate Clinical Research and Commercialization." Oracle states its AI World event will return to Las Vegas on October 25-28, 2026, with SuiteWorld heading to Las Vegas on October 25-28.

The broader context here is a timing gap that matters for anyone with a pension or investments. The $70 billion run rate is current monthly sales stretched into an annual pace, like a speedometer reading. The $664 billion backlog is remaining work Oracle must still build and deliver over time. For Oracle, fast growth in infrastructure, in data centers, power, networking and chips for AI, now carries operating leverage, while the older software side slipped.

In my view, the link specialists will focus on is between the two companies. Oracle's bookings pace and share price now move closely with OpenAI use, while the April miss showed user and sales targets can fall short even as building continues. Watch how fast backlog turns into revenue, whether business sales keep expanding after July, and whether the ad run rate adds a new income source without shrinking profit on each AI query.
