Former Idol contestant Caleb Flynn found guilty of murdering wife

An Ohio jury found 40-year-old Caleb Flynn guilty of murder on Tuesday, Sept. 29, in the death of his wife, Ashley Flynn. The jury deliberated for about 2.5 hours before returning its verdict. Billboard
Flynn, a former American Idol contestant and former Ohio music pastor from Tipp City, was convicted on all nine counts against him. The charges included aggravated murder, multiple counts of murder, felonious assault and tampering with evidence. He had pleaded not guilty going into the trial. NBC News
Prosecutors alleged that Flynn shot his wife twice in the back of the head while she was in bed. After the shooting, he called 911 and told the dispatcher that a burglary had taken place and that an intruder had killed his wife. His behaviour after the call, and the physical evidence in the bedroom, were examined in detail during the trial. ABC News
The case also set out details of the couple's family life. Flynn's marriage to Ashley Flynn had lasted about 16 years. The couple share two daughters.
The trial heard that Flynn had carried on a 1.5-year affair with Alleigha Botner, now 24, who worked as an intern at his church. Botner gave hours of testimony during the proceedings. Prosecutors pointed to the affair as part of the background to the killing. The defence had denied that Flynn killed his wife.
Flynn's link to entertainment comes from 2013. He reached the televised judges' auditions on season 12 of American Idol but did not advance to the main competition. He later worked as a music pastor in Ohio.
He now faces up to life in prison without the possibility of parole. That sentence, if imposed, would mean detention for the rest of his life with no release. He is scheduled to be sentenced on Monday.
Ohio Attorney General Wilson issued a statement on the guilty verdict in September 2026. The statement confirmed the outcome of the Tipp City case. No further details of sentencing were included in the facts confirmed so far.
