Sony Will Restrict PS5 Pro Sales in Japan to Active Local Players

Sony Japan will sell the PS5 Pro in Japan only to customers who meet three linked conditions. Buyers must play on a Sony account registered in Japan, must use that same Japan-registered account to buy the console, and must have logged at least 60 hours on PS5 or PS4 between September 27, 2024 and September 27, 2026. Applications to buy open on October 7. Approved applicants can buy a PS5 Pro from October 26 to November 2. If applications exceed units in stock, Sony will allocate stock by lottery, or random draw. Engadget
Japanese outlets covering the Sony Store process have detailed how that lottery will work. Winners are to be notified sequentially from around October 26 by email, with an added notice via LINE, the messaging app, for applicants who linked their Sony account to LINE. Yahoo News Japan Units ordered through that process are scheduled for delivery in early to mid-November 2026. Supply is tight. The PS5 Pro has been unavailable at major U.S. retailers due to stock shortage, and Sony believes component supply constraints affecting PS5 Pro stock will continue through early 2027. Engadget
For readers who manage identity systems and entitlement checks, the login and permission systems that decide who can access what, the implementation is straightforward in concept. Playtime is already metered, or counted automatically, per account across PS4 and PS5. Region registration is already bound to the account. Tying purchase eligibility to both creates a filter that is difficult to satisfy with a newly created account or a cross-region account. The 60-hour threshold, measured over a fixed two-year window, functions as proof of prior use rather than proof of purchase alone.
There is precedent in Japan for tightly controlled PlayStation hardware distribution. PlayStation Japan published details of the PlayStation 5 Pro 30th Anniversary Limited model on September 30, 2024, with Sony Interactive Entertainment handling reservation application acceptance and notification of lottery results. Consoles already support backward compatibility at scale, meaning old games run on new hardware, with more than 8,500 PS4 games playable on PS5. Buyers have options for a Blu-ray disc drive model or a fully digital model. Supported titles include 120fps support for smoother motion and ray tracing for shadows and reflections, a lighting technique that makes images look more realistic.
The broader context here is that Sony is trading open commerce for allocation efficiency. A lottery alone randomizes access. A lottery gated by account region and verified playtime narrows the pool to active local users before randomization happens. That reduces the value of bulk account creation and makes secondary-market arbitrage, buying to resell at a markup, more cumbersome, without requiring in-store queues or manual review. The cost is exclusion. Legitimate new players, returning players below the threshold, and households sharing hardware under one login will fall outside the rule even if they intend to use the machine.
In my view, that tradeoff makes more sense when supply cannot be fixed quickly. If constraints run into early 2027, Sony faces an extended period where every unit shipped will sell. The question then becomes allocation, not demand generation. The parallel, for readers familiar with cloud services, is capacity management during shortages. Providers prioritize sustained users, queue the rest, and use usage data, or telemetry, they already collect to enforce the policy.
Looking to the longer term, in my view, what this could enable is a more account-centric hardware model. Tying scarce new hardware to that installed behavior closes the loop between service history and device access. I have watched my own children move from disc to download to subscription without thinking about the infrastructure underneath. They notice friction only when access is denied. A 60-hour rule is invisible to the established player and absolute for everyone else. That is precisely why it works as a filter, and why it will be debated as a precedent.
