Tinder launched Group Hangouts on September 30, 2026. The feature lets groups of friends discover other groups and make plans around a shared activity TechCrunch. It sits at the top of Tinder's main home screen. It is rolling out in phases in the U.S. and select markets, with more markets to follow.

To start, a user picks an activity and invites at least two friends. Once the group reaches at least three members, its group profile can appear in Tinder's main card stack, the deck of profiles users swipe through. A group can include up to 15 people.

A match needs only one like from each side. When at least one person in each of two groups likes the other group, Tinder opens a shared chat for both groups. That moves much of the moderation work from before the match to inside the live conversation.

The chat controls account for the group setting. A member can leave the conversation while staying in the friend group. A member can also block or report another participant. Leaving a chat does not mean leaving friends, and a block or report can target one person without shutting down the whole group.

Group Hangouts continues Tinder's push toward activity-based matching with less pressure than a solo date. Tinder earlier launched Double Date, which lets a user pair with a friend to browse other pairs. The company called it a low-pressure, group-first way to explore dating. Tinder also launched an Events tab for finding local activities such as speakeasies, bowling and pottery classes. In September 2026, Tinder expanded in-person events to what it described as dozens of additional cities. A separate company update described the expansion as nine new cities across the U.S. and Europe, bringing the total to 26 markets live by September.

Tinder has tried group matching before. Tinder Social let users bring friends into a group and swipe and match with other nearby groups. The product organization lists Claire Watanabe as VP of product management.

Tinder describes the feature as a way to take the pressure off one-on-one dates Bloomberg. The company reports more than 630 million downloads since launch, more than 100 billion matches, and availability in 185+ countries and 60+ languages Tinder Press Room. Monthly active users fell 7% in the second quarter of 2026, after an 8% decline in the prior quarter.

Tinder tied the launch to a short promotional sweepstakes. Tinder published Tinder Group Hangouts Sweepstakes Official Rules in its help center under Promotions and sweepstakes Tinder Help Center. The sweepstakes ran from 12:00 p.m. PST on September 29, 2026 to 12:00 p.m. PST on September 30, 2026, with a total prize value of USD $14,000. A winners list can be requested by sending the requestor's name, address, city, state or province/territory and zip or postal code on a 3x5-inch card.

The broader context here is where dating apps find enough active users to work, what developers call liquidity. One-to-one swiping is built for a large pool of profiles and quick starts. Group and activity matching is built for getting people to show up. The first approach is easier to scale but leaves rejection and safety risk with the individual. The second needs coordination. It takes three people to become visible, up to 15 to keep the group workable, and at least two likes, one from each group, to open chat.

In my view, worth flagging is how this returns to group-first design after years centered on individual profiles. Shared activities give a stalled chat something to fall back on, and having friends present can reduce harassment. A phased rollout lets Tinder adjust for density, since a three-person minimum and a 15-person cap work differently in a crowded city and a smaller town. The long pattern with social products is that people join faster when friends are already there. If Tinder keeps group creation simple and lets people leave chats cleanly, it can create more real-world meetups without requiring a solo first date.
