A Vincent van Gogh landscape estimated at US$180 million leads 12 paintings expected to fetch more than US$450 million at Sotheby's in New York.

The group is the Blaquier-Arrieta Collection, described as an Argentine collection from the Blaquier family and made up of 12 Impressionist and Modern works, according to Artnet and BNN Bloomberg. The total expectation of more than US$450 million was reported by The Guardian.

Bidding starts in New York. Sotheby's lists The Blaquier-Arrieta Collection Evening Auction, an evening sale reserved for its highest-value lots, as a live sale on 18 November 2026 at 6:00 PM EST, according to Sotheby's.

The lead lot is a Van Gogh landscape with 'Châtaigniers', the French word for chestnut trees, in its title. Sotheby's puts its estimate, the published price expectation before bidding, at US$180 million. The auction house expects it to beat the artist's existing auction record, The Art Newspaper reported.

The sale also includes works by Paul Cézanne and Vincent van Gogh, Sotheby's sale pages confirm, plus a work by Edgar Degas and a work by Renoir. A second lot in the group carries an estimate of US$120 million.

There is paperwork behind at least part of the consignment. The Art Newspaper reported that Cézanne works in the sale had been restituted, or formally returned to the owners' heirs, by the Musée d'Orsay in Paris. Restitution cases often turn on provenance, the documented chain of ownership.

The 12 paintings went on public view at Sotheby's in London for two days ahead of the November sale, The Guardian reported. Short previews are now routine for high-value consignments travelling between London, New York and Hong Kong before auction week.

What makes this stand out for casual viewers is the concentration. Twelve pictures, one evening, one owner. For fans, this means a rare chance to see them together in the room or online before they separate again.
