David Fincher has decided not to renew his exclusive deal with Netflix when it expires next year. Bloomberg first reported the decision on 29 September 2026 under the headline "David Fincher, Director of 'Fight Club,' to Exit Netflix Deal" Bloomberg, with Deadline confirming the news on 30 September.

Fincher signed the exclusive pact, a deal to work only for one buyer, with Netflix in 2020 after directing Mank for the streamer, according to Deadline. At the time he described the arrangement as running for another four years, in comments reported by The Playlist. That run is over.

His work with the service goes back to its early push into original programming. He executive produced and directed House of Cards, the political drama that helped establish Netflix as a home for prestige series, according to Deadline. He later took broader control on Mindhunter. There he served as executive producer, showrunner and director. Showrunner is the person in overall creative charge of a series.

Mindhunter was created by Joe Penhall and streamed for two seasons on Netflix, according to Deadline. On film, Netflix also released his last two features, Mank and The Killer starring Michael Fassbender, as noted by The A.V. Club. Both films went out primarily on streaming rather than through a full cinema release.

That is a contrast with his earlier theatrical career. His 2014 film Gone Girl was his last feature to receive a wide theatrical release, a full run in cinemas across many markets, according to Deadline. It earned $370.8 million at the global box office.

One more Netflix project is still to arrive. Fincher directed The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, a sequel to Once Upon a Time in Hollywood written by Quentin Tarantino, according to Deadline. The film will play in Imax theatres from 25 November for a two-week run.

What makes this stand out is the breadth of the partnership. It covered series and films, directing and producing, early streaming bets and later features. For viewers, the Cliff Booth release will now mark the end of that chapter.
