Halsey steps behind the camera for Our Hero, Balthazar

Halsey wants the next credit to read producer.
Born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, the singer told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview published 30 September 2026 that producing is her new chapter. Her first feature-length producing credit is the indie film Our Hero, Balthazar, made outside the major studio system.
The music numbers explain why the move turns heads. Halsey has released five studio albums and earned three Grammy nominations, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Her debut, Badlands, went three-times platinum, peaked at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 and passed 9 billion on-demand streams globally.
Screen work came in stages. Halsey appeared in Ti West's MaXXXine (2024) alongside Mia Goth and in Americana opposite Sydney Sweeney. Behind the camera, she executive-produced — a role that usually means backing a project creatively or financially without running the set day to day — the hour-long concept musical film If I Can't Have Love, I Want Power (2021) and Charlie Kaufman's short How to Shoot a Ghost (2025).
Our Hero, Balthazar is a step up in scale. It was directed by Oscar Boyson, who previously produced the Safdie brothers features Good Time and Uncut Gems. It stars Jaeden Martell as Balthazar, Pippa Knowles as Eleanor and Asa Butterfield as Solomon.
The story centres on a wealthy New York City teenager who travels to Texas to befriend a would-be mass shooter in an attempt to impress his activist crush, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The film already has a public launch behind it. Halsey attended the premiere with Avan Jogia, and the event was held at AMC The Americana at Brand 18 in Los Angeles on April 3, according to Variety. On 4 April 2026, Halsey promoted an Our Hero, Balthazar marathon week with screenings in New York and Los Angeles, according to Instagram.
What makes this stand out is the control it gives her. Singing and acting put Halsey in front of the camera. Producing puts her among the people who choose the script, the director and the release plan long before opening night.
