Cove Rangers barred from new signings until May 2027 over payment breach

Cove Rangers cannot register new players for the rest of the season after breaking Scottish football's payment rules.
The Scottish Professional Football League (SPFL), which runs Scotland's four senior divisions, imposed a registration embargo until 31 May 2027. In plain terms, that stops a club adding new signings. The current squad can keep playing. No fresh faces can be added.
The league also fined the club £5,000 for the breaches, with £2,000 of that suspended, according to BBC Sport. The SPFL confirmed the season-long embargo in a statement published on 1 October 2026.
The case centres on an old bill. Cove Rangers admitted failing to pay a historic contractual payment to a player on time. They also admitted failing to tell the SPFL that they were in default.
It did not stop there. The club further admitted giving incorrect information when it certified that it had no overdue payments to current or former players as at 31 January 2026. That kind of declaration is routine housekeeping in Scottish football. Clubs must confirm their accounts with players are up to date.
Cove Rangers have now paid the player in full. The club said the SPFL decision related to a historic contractual payment from 2024 and subsequent reporting matters.
In a club statement published on its official website on 1 October 2026, Cove Rangers said it was disappointed by the severity of the sanctions. It said it is reviewing the decision and considering all available options.
For fans, this means a quiet few months. The team must get through until next summer with the players it already has. No emergency loan. No January spark.
What makes this stand out is the length. An embargo to the end of May covers the whole season. It leaves no room for a mid-season rebuild, even if form dips or injuries bite.
