Duchess of Edinburgh moved to tears at REME Memorial Day in Lichfield

Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Edinburgh wiped away tears as she stood with Army engineers at a memorial day in Staffordshire.
The Duchess attended the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) Memorial Day at the Royal British Legion National Remembrance Gardens in Lichfield, in coverage published on 1 October 2026. Hello! Magazine She was photographed brushing away a tear during a presentation. She paused. She composed herself and carried on.
The service honoured the Corps as it marked its 84th birthday. The focus was the dedication of a new memorial centrepiece. It was made by REME metalsmiths.
The Duchess was there as Colonel-in-Chief, the ceremonial head of the Corps. The title carries no command powers. It means she represents the unit at formal occasions and keeps a close link with serving soldiers, veterans and families.
She took on the role in 2022. It was previously held by Prince Philip for over 50 years. Hello! Magazine That history gives the appointment its weight. The Colonel-in-Chief stands in front of the Corps on days of remembrance.
REME is the Army's repair and recovery Corps. Its soldiers, known as craftsmen, fix and maintain vehicles, weapons systems and other equipment. The Memorial Day brings veterans, serving personnel and bereaved families together in Lichfield.
The Lichfield visit fits a pattern of regular REME duties. In August 2025 she joined 4 Battalion REME for its 25th anniversary. British Army That event celebrated the battalion's service. This one asked for remembrance.
What makes this stand out is the quietness of the moment. There was no speech reported. There was only a tear wiped away during a presentation to families and veterans who know loss at close hand.
