Lombardi Exits Ontario Liberal Leadership Race and Backs Fairclough

Eric Lombardi has left the race for leader of the Ontario Liberal Party and endorsed Lee Fairclough.
The withdrawal was confirmed Oct. 1, just over a month before online voting was to begin. Lombardi, a housing advocate and founder of More Neighbours Toronto, announced it on his official X account @EricDLombardi, where he endorsed Fairclough for premier of Ontario.
Lombardi called Fairclough "substantive and pragmatic" The Globe and Mail. Fairclough is the Liberal MPP for Etobicoke-Lakeshore, an elected member of the Ontario legislature CP24.
Lombardi said he lacked the fundraising confidence to finish without taking on debt. The exit followed a missed $25,000 payment to the party on Wednesday Toronto Star.
Four candidates remain: Fairclough, Navdeep Bains, Stephanie Bowman and Dylan Marando. The next leader will be announced Nov. 21.
The contest follows the departure of Bonnie Crombie, who stepped down as leader after lukewarm support at the party's 2025 annual general meeting. John Fraser is serving as interim leader, the temporary leader until a permanent one is chosen.
The broader context here is financial viability as an early test. Lombardi entered without a seat in the legislature and without the donor and riding-association networks that sitting MPPs and former cabinet ministers can activate. A missed payment deadline is more than paperwork. It signals whether a campaign can staff phone banks, contact voters and sustain a multi-round online vote.
Looking at what this means for the field, the endorsement gives Fairclough a clear chance to consolidate Lombardi's housing-supply supporters, a group that does not fit neatly into traditional Liberal factions. Fairclough can absorb that policy energy without negotiating a merger with a larger rival camp. For Bains, Bowman and Marando, the arithmetic is unchanged in the short term. The race is smaller by one, but not yet narrower in ideas.
In practical terms, Fairclough is now positioned to carry the housing file into the final weeks, with Lombardi's supporters available as volunteers and small donors. Whether they transfer is a separate organizational question. Endorsements direct attention. They do not deliver membership lists on their own.
