A $2.7 million fund for feature documentaries has launched with a film about New York mayor Zohran Mamdani on its first slate. Doc Society announced the Doc Society Love & Rockets Fund on 1 October 2026, as reported by Variety.

Doc Society is a London-headquartered non-profit organisation that funds and supports independent documentary makers. The new fund is international and will back what the organisation calls cinematic non-fiction features, or feature-length documentaries made for cinemas, "in service of better futures."

Grants will be non-recoupable and worth up to $150,000. That means filmmakers do not have to pay the money back. Supported films will also get extra funding for distribution and engagement, the work that puts a finished film in front of audiences.

The launch commitment runs from now until mid-2028. Doc Society said the $2.7 million takes its annual film spend to more than $4 million.

Six projects form the inaugural group. Named titles include "Blackest Ever Black" directed by Roisin Agnew, "How to be a Woman in Iran" directed by Mahnaz Mohammadi and Vanessa Bowles, "Our Land" directed by Lucrecia Martel, and "With Time" directed by Noah Schaumus and Brit Fryer.

The remaining project is an untitled feature about the rise of Mamdani, as reported by Variety. It is listed as the Untitled New York Project. It is directed and produced by Julia Bacha and produced by Suhad Babaa, Tiffany Fisher-Love and Rula Salameh.

For viewers, this means early support rather than finished films. Grants of this kind are typically used for production and then for the long push to reach cinemas, festivals and wider release.
