Brussels Kanal museum opens 28 Nov as director exits

Brussels will open a vast new museum on 28 November. Its director leaves two days later. That double date now frames one of Europe's most watched cultural launches.
Yves Goldstein, managing director of Kanal-Centre Pompidou in Brussels, will depart on 30 November, immediately after the opening weekend. The Brussels-Capital Region said the parties "acknowledge a difference of opinion regarding the future of Kanal". The departure date was agreed with Brussels minister-president Boris Dilliès, according to The Art Newspaper.
The museum sits in a converted Citroën garage in the Belgian capital. It will offer 40,000 sq. m of art, architecture and public space. More than 300 works on loan from the Centre Pompidou in Paris will anchor the opening display.
The figures behind the project are large. The building work cost €230 million. Kanal plans to borrow art from Paris for the first five years at a cost of €2 million a year. The regional government reportedly loaned an extra €60 million to the Kanal Foundation, the body created to deliver the construction, in 2026. It has said the museum will need private donors after 2028.
Goldstein had announced in May 2026 that he would step down next spring. That timetable was later brought forward to November. He told The Brussels Times in May that he had no regrets about quitting.
Questions about money now sit beside the launch. The 1 October report on the museum's financial sustainability laid out the loan costs, the extra construction loan and the donor gap. Kanal has not disputed the opening date. Its website says visitors can discover Kanal from 28 November 2026, with the opening spread over 28 and 29 November.
For visitors, much of the offer is free. More than 20,000 sq. m, half the site, is public space open free of charge. That area includes a library, archives and research centre, salon, shop, bookshop and playground. Tickets for the opening exhibitions and all live events of the inaugural season are already on booking, according to Kanal.
That first live programme spans performance, dance, film, music and sound. One piece will be missing at the start. The opening of Kanal's separate building devoted to architecture was postponed after a rooftop fire in July.
What makes this stand out is the contrast. A paying loan meets a free half. A farewell follows a first weekend. For fans, this means two dates to hold: 28 November to look inside, 30 November for the leadership change.
