Harlequins back rower James Chisholm retires at 31 after Achilles injury

James Chisholm has retired from professional rugby union at the age of 31.
The Harlequins back row — one of the three loose forwards who carry, tackle and compete for the ball on the ground — ruptured his Achilles, the thick tendon above the heel, in January 2025. He has not been able to return to full fitness since, and Harlequins confirmed his retirement on 1 October 2026, according to Harlequins.
He never played for anyone else. Chisholm spent his entire professional career at The Stoop, making 164 appearances and scoring 21 tries for the London club, according to BBC Sport.
That run included the Premiership title in the 2020-21 season. The Premiership is England's top division, and that triumph remains the high point of his time in the quarters. It was a famous win, secured from fourth place in the play-offs with back-to-back away victories.
The injury came in the middle of last year and proved decisive. An Achilles rupture is a long, gruelling rehab at the best of times, demanding months off the leg and then a slow rebuild of power and speed. Chisholm tried to fight his way back through 2025 and into this season but could not get his body right.
Harlequins marked the announcement with an article titled "Chisholm retires from rugby union" and a farewell video titled "WATCH: James Chisholm | The end of an era". Both were published on 1 October 2026. It was a fitting send-off for a player whose face has been part of the club for more than a decade.
His loyalty was clear early. When Chisholm signed a new deal at the age of 26, he was the 18th player to recommit to Harlequins at that time. In an era of short contracts and frequent moves, that kind of staying power is rare.
What makes this stand out is the one-club story. Supporters watched him come through, earn his place, lift a league title and keep turning up. To finish at 31, with no farewell run-out, will sting. For fans, this means saying goodbye to a familiar shirt and a willing worker who gave Harlequins everything he had.
