Talia Ryder will play June Allyson opposite Tom Holland in Sony's untitled Fred Astaire biopic.

The casting was reported by The Hollywood Reporter on 1 October. Holland stars as Astaire. The film is a biopic, a drama shaped around a real life rather than an invented character.

Ryder joins two other cast members already set. Margaret Qualley will play Adele Astaire, Fred's older sister and Broadway partner. That points to the early stage act, the brother-sister dance team that made its name on theatre stages before Hollywood called.

Sabrina Carpenter will play Ginger Rogers, Astaire's frequent film co-star. The credit puts another central screen partnership into the story. Ryder's role completes the set of central women around him.

Allyson was a dancer and MGM actress. She was originally set to star opposite Astaire in the musical film Royal Wedding. That history gives Ryder a part rooted in studio-era casting, when line-ups could change before cameras rolled.

Ryder arrives with dance training to match it. She is a classically trained dancer, taught in formal technique from a young age. She began her career in Broadway's Matilda the Musical. She later took a role in Steven Spielberg's adaptation of West Side Story.

She has worked with Qualley before. The pair appeared together in Ethan Coen's Honey Don't. That shared set experience now carries into a very different production.

Behind the camera, Paul King directs. He co-wrote the screenplay with Steven Levenson. The script is based on Kathleen Riley's book The Astaires: Fred & Adele, which traces the sibling partnership. An adaptation starts from published material rather than an original script.

King is known to family audiences for directing Paddington, as noted by The Playlist. The producing team spans three banners. Amy Pascal and Rachel O'Connor produce for Pascal Pictures, while Ben Holden and Josh Hyams produce for Lightbulb Pictures. Holland also produces for his own company, Billy17. A producer guides a film from development to release, managing budget, schedule and key hires.

The Astaire family is involved. Fred Astaire's daughter Ava Astaire McKenzie supports the project. Her son Tyler McKenzie serves as consultant and co-producer, a role that blends advice on the story with a formal producing credit.

Sony first announced the Holland-led project in 2021, and it remains untitled. The cast can dance. For audiences, that matters because this is a story told through movement as much as dialogue, with sisters, partners and co-stars all central to how Astaire's career unfolded.
