Nicolas Cage has called Marvel's current films "a well-funded and glorified WWE."

He made the remark during a Q&A at Fan Expo Dallas while discussing the end of Spider-Noir, his live-action Marvel series at Prime Video, according to Deadline.

Prime Video has opted not to renew Spider-Noir for a second season, meaning the story stops after season one. The decision covers a straight cancellation after one run. Amazon MGM Studios and Sony Pictures Television are still exploring other Marvel projects in their partnership.

Cage said the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the linked series of Marvel films and shows, started out terrific. He described the early stories as marvellous for weaving threads together and telling character stories and backstories.

His criticism was aimed at the newer slate. He said the current output cuts too quickly to the fight. He said one thing he liked about Spider-Noir was that it held back from that and played as a detective story with a mystery.

He said he would like to see superhero storytelling get back to telling stories and not just cutting to the wrestling match. WWE is the professional wrestling organisation.

Cage had previously described the first season of Spider-Noir as "perfect." The series was created by Oren Uziel. Reports of the Dallas Q&A were first picked up by SlashFilm on 30 Sept, with further reports from The Hollywood Reporter, Entertainment Weekly and the Los Angeles Times on 1 Oct.

For fans, this means Spider-Noir ends as a single season. No second chapter is ordered. Any future Marvel show from the Amazon and Sony partnership would be a separate commission with its own cast, crew and writers' room.
