Tom Kim leads Asian Games golf with military exemption on the line

Tom Kim takes a one-stroke lead into the final round of Asian Games men's golf with far more than a medal at stake.
The South Korean shot a five-under-par 65 in the third round at Kasugai Country Club in Japan on 2 October to reach 12 under par, moving from two shots back to the top of the leaderboard BBC Sport. One round left.
His round included five birdies and an eagle, two under par on a single hole. That scoring burst flipped the tournament. Overnight leader Wang Wei-hsuan of Taiwan now sits one behind alongside Japan's Kazuki Higa.
For anyone new to golf, a one-shot lead over 18 holes is thin. A single bogey, one over par on a hole, can erase it. A back pin tucked near trouble can force a player to choose between attack and safety.
The wider stakes explain the attention. Able-bodied South Korean men are usually required to complete 18 to 21 months of military service before age 28. An Asian Games gold medal, or an Olympic medal of any colour, brings exemption apart from basic training lasting less than a month BBC Sport.
Footballer Son Heung-min followed that path. He won the Asian Games in 2018 and then served three weeks in 2020.
Kim has a second route to the same outcome. South Korea leads the men's team event by one stroke. A team gold would secure exemption for Kim and 28-year-old SH Kim even if neither wins the individual title. Their teammate Mun Do-yeob has already completed his service.
The schedule has been punishing. Kim travelled from the Presidents Cup in the United States to Japan for this event. He left the team competition early to make the trip, after posting a 4-1-0 record the weekend before the Games.
His form is strong. Kim opened the Asian Games with a 67 and was tied for seventh after round one before climbing the board. He has four PGA Tour titles to his name, plus an Asian Tour Order of Merit crown and victory at the 2026 Scottish Open. At Paris 2024 he finished eighth in the Olympic golf after sitting tied for third after day one.
For fans, this is where golf tightens. Kim must protect a small lead while chasing a prize that could shape the next two years of his career. Higa has home support. Wang has already shown he can lead this field. The final round will decide it.
