BBC Radio 4's Long Wave service will cease transmission on 27 June 2026, ending nearly 90 years of broadcasting from the Droitwich transmitter site in Worcestershire. The BBC announced the closure in May 2023, and the final switch-off is scheduled for tomorrow. What began as the backbone of Britain's national radio service has become, over decades, a progressively smaller operation serving an audience that has moved to other platforms.

The 198 kHz Long Wave frequency has operated from Droitwich since the 1930s. At that time, Long Wave offered a technical advantage: its low frequency allows signals to travel via ground wave — hugging the earth's surface — over several hundred kilometres, and to skip off the ionosphere at night to reach far greater distances. That made it the obvious engineering choice for national coverage before terrestrial FM, DAB (Digital Audio Broadcasting), and internet streaming arrived. Today, those propagation advantages have been displaced by cheaper, more efficient distribution methods, and the operating costs of running a high-power AM transmitter have become harder to justify against a listener base that has largely moved away.

Following the shutdown, the BBC will decommission the transmitter hardware at Droitwich. The two large masts will remain standing, and a campaign is already underway to have them designated as heritage structures. Whether Historic England moves to protect them is a separate process, though the effort reflects how visibly the Droitwich installation has become part of the local landscape and the broader history of British broadcasting.

The audience most directly affected is specific and relatively narrow: mariners, listeners in parts of Europe where FM coverage is poor or absent, and an ageing cohort of listeners who have not switched to DAB. Radio 4 continues to be available via FM (92–95 MHz), DAB, Freeview, Freesat, Sky, and the BBC Sounds app — a practical set of alternatives from a network coverage perspective, though one that requires listeners to make the shift themselves.

There is a technical point worth noting. The 198 kHz carrier has served not only as a broadcast medium but also incidentally as a time-signal reference and navigational aid across northern Europe. Those functions are now handled by separate infrastructure — the MSF signal at 60 kHz from Anthorn, for instance — so the Droitwich closure does not directly remove those capabilities. Even so, the loss of a high-power, low-frequency transmitter of this scale does shift the radio frequency landscape; such installations have become less common across the continent.

The closure also marks the end of a particular engineering culture. High-power medium-wave and long-wave transmitter sites required specialist radio-frequency engineering skills that have grown genuinely scarce. The teams who maintained Droitwich's valve-based equipment through the digital era occupied a professional niche that the industry has not replaced — it has simply rendered unnecessary.

Whether the masts survive as listed heritage structures or are eventually dismantled remains to be determined. But the transmission itself ends tomorrow. Radio 4 continues on every platform its current listeners actually use. The frequency goes silent. The service persists.
