Tesla introduced Emergency Drive Away on October 1, 2026, a mode that lets a driver leave a Supercharger while still plugged in during an emergency. Electrek The feature works only at Superchargers in the United States. Engadget

A Supercharger is Tesla's fast public charger. Use requires the latest Tesla software. Pre-2021 Model S and Model X vehicles do not support the feature. To start it, the driver shifts into Drive while plugged in, then holds the brake pedal and taps Activate on the central touchscreen. Engadget Both actions are required.

Tesla warns that driving off while connected will damage the car and the charging station and should be used only in an emergency. The company says deliberate misuse will bring additional penalties. It puts the electrical and civil costs of using the feature at up to $25,000. Engadget

The launch followed the shooting of a driver inside a Tesla taxi while charging at an In-N-Out Burger location in Twin Falls, Idaho. Engadget That shooting was deadly. Electrek The feature arrived two months after the Twin Falls shooting. Electrek

The broader context here is a trade-off between protecting equipment and protecting people. The facts show that leaving while plugged in will cause damage. This mode accepts that damage as better than staying in danger. In my view, that order is easy to defend and hard to get right, because an emergency leaves little time to decide.

Looking at what this means in practice, the restrictions do much of the work. Think of it like an emergency exit that damages the door when used. The two-step check makes accidental use less likely, but drivers must learn the sequence beforehand and will not discover it under stress. The cost figure and penalties should discourage casual use while keeping the option when the alternative is worse. The rollout stays narrow, with US stations, current software, and newer cars only. For owners, the task is plain. Install the update, learn the steps early, and treat use as rare. The best outcome is a safety valve that is seldom pulled but ready when needed.
